Acanthosis Nigricans & Obesity - Aastha Bariatrics
Acanthosis nigricans and obesity
Acanthosis nigricans is a skin condition that usually occurs around creases and folds in the body in the form of dark coloured patches. Which are either tan or brown in colour.m They appear in areas like – armpits, neck region, knees, elbows, hands, groin as well as knuckles.
Acanthosis nigricans can appear as dark or velvety skin on the body.
One of the most common causes of Acanthosis nigricans is being overweight. Other causes include : type 2 diabetes. Acanthosis nigricans occur in patients with high blood insulin levels , a condition called insulin resistance. The prevalence of obesity in adolescents is rising rapidly and Insulin resistance is seen in patients who are obese or overweight. Which leads them to develop type 2 diabetes
In some cases , Acanthosis nigricans can be hereditary or part of a genetic syndrome. It can also be caused by certain medications such as oral contraceptives, steroids, hormone treatments and in some cases with cancer.
Obesity associated with acanthosis nigricans is the most common type of acanthosis nigricans. It can occur at any age but is more common in adulthood. Males and females are affected equally.
Acanthosis can indicate the presence of pre diabetes. If there’s any sign of such a condition make sure to consult a doctor so that you can be tested for prediabetes or diabetes.
If a person loses weight there are high chances that the patches will fade. And the best treatment for a person who is obese and has a BMI over 27 ,is to undergo a bariatric surgery.
By getting their diabetes and weight under control, people have higher chances of lessening the visibility of acanthosis nigricans.
People who are overweight or obese are more likely to develop acanthosis nigricans but may lessen or go away after weight loss.
Bariatric or weight loss surgery is the most effective treatment for people with severe obesity. It also helps in reducing insulin resistance and improves diabetes which in turn will help in reducing the patches of acanthosis nigricans over a period of time.
Those patients who have hyperinsulinemia are at greater risk of developing atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. So, it is of importance to identify such patients with acanthosis nigricans, who are at risk of developing associated medical conditions.
