Bariatric surgery eligibility

Bariatric surgery requirements:

Bariatric surgery, also known as weight loss surgery, refers to surgical procedures that assist in weight loss by making changes to the digestive system.

Bariatric surgery is considered when the patient has severe obesity or individuals who are unable to lose weight by medications, changes in the dietary intake, in lifestyle are most likely to undergo bariatric surgery.

There are different types of bariatric surgeries present: Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy ,Mini gastric bypass ,Gastric Bypass ,Adjustable gastric band ,Intra-gastric balloon ,Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch, etc. While different types of bariatric surgeries work differently.

During all the bariatric surgeries, the size of the stomach is made smaller to restrict the amount of food the patient can eat. Hence, reducing the appetite and leading to significant weight loss.

Bariatric surgery is not for everyone who is overweight. One needs to meet certain medical guidelines to qualify for undergoing weight loss surgery.

The criteria for undergoing bariatric surgery are:

  • A person who belongs to the age group between 9 to 70 years.

  • The classification of BMI (Body Mass Index) is as below:

  • BMI less than 25 is considered as normal.

  • BMI between 25 to 30 is considered overweight.

  • BMI between 30 to 35 is considered as grade I obesity.

  • BMI greater than 30 to 35 is considered as grade II obesity.

  • BMI greater than 40 to 50 is considered as morbidly obese.

  • BMI greater than 50 is considered as super morbidly obese.

For a person with a BMI less than 27 , there is no requirement for surgery. However a proper diet plan along with some activity or exercise is suggested for weight loss.

Anyone who has a BMI greater than 27 ,is eligible for undergoing bariatric surgery. Bariatric surgery becomes the only viable option for anybody above 27 BMI, to not only lose weight but to treat or prevent any comorbidities associated with obesity.

A person must fulfil the above criteria to become eligible for undergoing bariatric surgery.

Weight loss is a transformative procedure for people struggling with obesity. But it is not for everyone. There are a number of reasons why certain groups of people should not have bariatric surgery or who disqualifies from undergoing bariatric surgery which includes:

  • Age – Bariatric surgeries may not be performed if you are below 9 years of age. As your body is still developing. Similarly, people above the age of 70 may be denied bariatric surgery.

  • BMI – If a person’s body mass index is below 27, without any comorbidities is one of the main reasons to be denied for weight loss surgery. However, patients with a BMI of 27 or above  may be accepted as candidates of bariatric surgery.

  • Health – If a person has an untreated stomach infection, lung or liver disease, active cancer, psychological condition or any other serious illness that could pose risk to the person’s safety during or after the procedure, may be denied weight loss surgery approval.

  • Smoking – Your surgeon will require you to quit smoking at least a few weeks before the scheduled bariatric surgery. Nicotine present in tobacco smoke can constrict your blood vessels, and increase your risk during surgery or interfere with your post-operative recovery.

  • Alcohol – Unhealthy habits like consumption of alcohol can lead to serious health complications both during and after the bariatric procedure. It can lead to a longer hospital stay and overall longer recovery time. In some cases, it can jeopardise your life.

  • Diet – Pre and post- op bariatric diet is a critical element in the safety and success of your weight loss surgery. It is very important to follow the prescribed dietary guidelines before and after the surgery.

Patients are given pre surgery guidelines and a diet that they must follow before surgery takes place. If the patient is not able to follow the guidelines or adhere to the diet, the surgery could be delayed or cancelled.

The above reasons imply the people who are not eligible or disqualified for undergoing bariatric surgery. In such a case, it is important to consult with your bariatric surgeon or dietitian to understand which specific eligibility criteria you may have failed to fulfil.
