Celiac Disease Explained: Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis & Gluten-Free Diet
Introduction to Celiac Disease
Celiac disease is an immune system reacting to Gluten. Before knowing celiac disease we need to know about “GLUTEN”.
Gluten is a sticky protein found in wheat, barley, and Rye that acts like ‘glue’to hold dough together, giving bread its stretchy, chewy texture. It naturally occurs in these grains but is often added to processed food to improve texture.
Learning Fact (Real-Life Experience) -
During my internship,I met a patient who complained of constant bloating, weakness and unexplained weight loss, she had been taking medicines for acidity and digestion for months but nothing was improving. After further evaluation she diagnosed with ‘celiac disease’.That was the movement i truly understood that is the condition is not just “gas trouble” or “food sensitivity”it is much deeper, what surprised me the most is that symptoms are not always dramatic some patients only complain of tiredness or anemia, some have chronic diarrhoea in children it may show as poor growth, many times it gets ignored for years.
As a nutrition student ,I realized that treatment is simple in theory but challenging in real life—–a strict lifelong gluten-free diet.
- No Wheat
- No Normal Roti
- No Regular Bread Or Buscuits
What Happens in Celiac Disease?
Celiac disease is not just a stomach problem. Many people think it is normal gas or indigestion, but actually it is an autoimmune condition.
When a person with celiac disease eats gluten[wheat, maida, barley, rye]their body reacts badly.the immune system starts damaging the small intestine, because of this the body cannot absorb nutrients properly. And that is where many health problems start.
Common Symptoms of Celiac Disease
Stomach Issues
continue bloating,gas,abdominal pain,diarrhoea or constipation.
Weight & Nutrition
Unexplained weight loss, lack of appetite or difficulty gaining weight.
Energy & Body
extreme fatigue & weakness & jointpain.
Other Symptoms
itchy skin,anemia[low iron] or dizziness.
Frequent mouth ulcers or sores.
Challenges in Indian Homes
A.how difficult is in Indian homes where wheat is staple.
B.how mothers to cook separately, how children feel left out at birthday parties
How is it Diagnosed?
Diagnosis usually starts with a blood test.that check for specific antibodies. If the blood suggests celiac disease, doctors may recommend an endoscopy to check the small intestine lining.
It is a very important thing I learned that a person should not stop eating gluten before testing. If the gluten is removed before the test, the result may come negative even if the person actually has celiac disease.
Is It the Same as Gluten Sensitivity?
Many people confuse celiac disease with gluten sensitivity. They are not the same. In gluten sensitivity, the immune system does not attack the intestine. But in celiac disease, the intestine get damaged. That’s why it is more serious and needs strict lifelong management.
Treatment — The Only Way is a Gluten-Free Diet
There is no medicine to cure celiac disease. The only treatment is a strict gluten free diet for life. Even small amounts of gluten can use damage.
Foods to Avoid
WHEAT [ATTA ,MAIDA,SUJI,PASTA,BREAD]
BARLEY
RYE
SOME PROCESSED FOOD THAT CONTAIN HIDDEN GLUTEN.
Foods to Include
In an Indian household ,this can be challenging because wheat is a staple food. But thankfully, we also have many naturally gluten free options like –
RICE
JOWAR
BAJRA
RAGI
DAL
FRUITS & VEGETBLES
MILK & CURD
Important Tips for Managing Celiac Disease
Reading label is very important .Many packaged foods may contain hidden gluten, Also ,cross contamination is a big issue. For example, using the same tawa for wheat roti and gluten free roti can cause problems.Even small crumbs matter.
Because the intestine is damaged many people with celiac disease have deficiencies like,
IRON DEFECIENCY
VITAMIN B12 DEFICIENCY
VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY
CALCIUM DEFICIENCY
As a nutrition student ,I feel this is an important area where we can support patients. It is not about removing gluten but also about correcting these deficiencies and removing gut health gradually.
Emotional Impact of Celiac Disease
One thing I realised is that celiac disease is not only physical but also emotional. Imagine a child who cannot eat cake at birthday parties, Imagine a woman who has to cook separately for herself everyday. In social gatherings people may say “just eat a little, nothing will happen”but someone with celiac disease, even a little can cause them.
Support from family is very important. Education and awareness are also important so that patient does not feel isolated.
What Happens If It Is Ignored?
If it is not get treated, long term complicationscan develop, such as
SEVERE ANEMIA
WEAK BONES[OSTEOPOROSIS]
GROWTH PROBLEMS IN CHILDREN
INCREASE OTHER RISK OF OTHER AUTOIMMUNE CONDITIONS.
That is why early diagnosis and proper management are essential.
My Personal Reflection
While studying this condition, I understood that celiac disease is not about restriction, but about awareness. With proper guidance, a person can live a completely healthy and active life. Its only requires discipline and understanding.
As a future nutritionist professional i feel our role is not just to give a diet chart,it is ti educate ,guide and emotionally support, food is connected to culture, emotions , and family. So when we remove something like “wheat” from someone life, we must replace it with confident and proper alternatives.
