Diet After Gastric Bypass Surgery (Indian Diet) - Aastha Bariatrics

The Most Ignored Disease – Obesity
Today, bariatrics is a powerful tool to defeat obesity scientifically. The umbrella of bariatrics has a lot of advanced methods for different individuals. Your bariatric surgeon will suggest a treatment, based on your BMI, age, and medical conditions.
One such bariatric surgery is the gastric bypass, here the surgeon will create a smaller gastric pouch from the existing stomach, and bypass the remaining stomach. This smaller gastric pouch is then directly attached to the small intestine.
This method restricts over-eating and increases satiety. The person eventually eats less and only enough for the needs. The extra accumulated fats in the body are then broken down and utilised to provide energy. Post-surgery, within 6-10 months, the patient can lose all the extra weight and reach their ideal body weight.
We, at Aastha health care, support the patient throughout their weight loss journey. Post-surgery, the patient is guided with diet and lifestyle changes. Complete habitual programming is done. Thus, the patient becomes self-reliant for their health.
Just like weaning is done for a newborn. Similarly, the new resized stomach is treated like a new organ. To take care of this new stomach, intensive care is required.
The 3 phases, post gastric bypass are:
Liquid phase – the very first phase, post gastric bypass surgery is the liquid phase. Starting with Clear liquid, strained and has no solid food particles is to be consumed. Fat-free, sugar-free foods are to be given towards the start. These can be clear, strained, pulp-free fruit juices, fat-free, non-spiced soups/broths and coconut water.
- Foods like vegetable strained soups,
- Dal water,
- Chicken soup/broth (without any meat pieces),
- and Unsweetened fruit juices are added.
This phase continues for 21 days:
Pureed phase – this phase, again should be intact for another 19-21 days. Here the post-operated individual consumes foods that are in blenderized puree form, and thick consistency. Spices, caffeine, tea and alcohol behave like severe irritants for the stomach. And thus, these are restricted.
Spices are yet to be avoided. If need persists, one can add less than normal amount of spice. Try incorporating one spice at a time.
- Mashed vegetables, fruits.
- Thick blenderized dals,
- Cooked and mashed cereals,
- Skimmed milk, curd, buttermilk,
- Lean meat grounded finely and cooked,
- Soft scrambled eggs etc. are suggested.
Soft diet -
Here, one can consume foods like Dal khichdi,
Curd rice,
Dal dhokli,
Cooked vegetables without skin,
steamed/baked white fish,
Stewed fruits like apples, pears, etc.
One can transition to normal solid foods after soft foods with the suggestion of the nutritionist.
