Obesity and Respiratory Diseases -Aastha Bariatrics
Man’s captivity or freedom is dependent on the state of his mind. From this it follows thats whether a man is healthy or unhealthy, this completely depends on himself. Illness is the end result not only of our actions but also of our thoughts.
Over the past century, India has transitioned from an era dominated by disease burden attributed to infections, childhood deaths to an era of lifestyle diseases. These lifestyle diseases are related to chronic diseases- Non communicable diseases (NCDs). Most of these are based on human behaviour and can be prevented at an individual level as well as family and societal levels.
The country has shifted from infectious diseases to NCDs like Obesity, Respiratory diseases, Mental disorders, CVD, Hormonal imbalance etc.
These NCDs are governed by a cluster of risk factors and their determinants, like tobacco and alcohol use, unhealthy diet, lack of physical activity, overweight & obesity, pollution (air, water and soil) and stress.
Obesity: The number of overweight and obese people in India doubled between 2005 and 2015. Among individuals aged between 15-49 years, 20.7 per cent of women and 18.6 per cent of men have been found to be overweight or obese. Marketing of processed foods too needs to be tracked. Increase in taxes on unhealthy foods, adequate labeling, and building an environment favourble to physical activity will be critical in combating the epidemic.
Respiratory diseases: India had an estimated 22.2 million chronic COPD patients and around 35 million chronic asthma patients in 2016
Other than air pollution from vehicles and industry, global warming also increases risk to respiratory health. Global warming has extended the duration of the pollen season and altered the timing, production and distribution of aeroallergens. Both pollen and air pollutants have risen simultaneously in the environment, leading to an enhanced airway inflammation, thereby increasing the frequency of respiratory allergy and cases of asthma.
Etiology (causes) of Lifestyle diseases: Non communicable diseases are driven by seemingly unrelated causes such as rapid unplanned urbanization, globalization, unhealthy lifestyles and population ageing. Other causes such as hypertension, high blood glucose, elevated blood lipids etc.
Risk factors include:An important way of controlling NCDs is by controlling the risk factors associated with it. In other words, a number of communicable diseases can be prevented by controlling the lifestyle habits related with those diseases. There are a number of low-cost solutions that can be enforced by the government to reduce the common modifiable risk factors1. Monitoring the trends of non -communicable diseases and their associated risks is crucial for guiding policies and guidelines.
Lifestyle diseases are a threat to the socio-economic aspects of nations globally and appropriate actions for their management are the need of the moment. Management of lifestyle diseases includes proper diagnosis, screening and treatment of these diseases in addition to providing palliative care for people who require it.
